I am Professor of English and a faculty member in the Online Master of Arts in Apologetics at Houston Baptist University, where I teach classes in cultural, imaginative, and literary apologetics. I have written a book on imaginative apologetics, Apologetics and the Christian Imagination: An Integrated Approach to Defending the Faith (Emmaus Road, 2017) and a memoir: Not God’s Type: An Atheist Academic Lays Down Her Arms (Ignatius, 2014). I am also a published poet.
My Ph.D. is in English, from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. I also hold an MA in English from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, an MA in Christian Apologetics from Biola University, and a BA in English from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
My research interests are primarily in Inklings studies, especially the work of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, and I am the Charles Williams Subject Editor for The Journal of Inklings Studies. I am currently working on a book about J.R.R. Tolkien’s modern sources: Tolkien’s Modern Sources: Middle-earth Beyond the Middle Ages (forthcoming from Kent State University Press, 2019).
